Staffordshire Police "is not backing down" from helpless people

Chris Noble, police chief

According to a police force, changing how it handles calls involving mental health does not mean "stepping away from people in need.".

According to Staffordshire Police Chief Constable, officers were devoting too much time to assisting the weak rather than fighting crime.

It occurs after the Met Police faced criticism for its decision to stop responding to emergency calls involving mental health.

Chief Constable Chris Noble of Staffordshire stated that "something needed to change.".

"It greatly irritates me that my officers are frequently spending more time on a shift in an A&E department, caring for a vulnerable person, than they are in the home of someone who has experienced domestic abuse, caring for children, or actively preventing crime," he said.

If law enforcement is to concentrate on reducing crime and disorder, "something has to change. ".

There were worries that if officers did respond, there would be a "vacuum" when the Met announced similar plans last week.

The top police officer in Staffordshire disagreed, claiming that police would instead direct people to better resources because they were "not best equipped" to handle incidents involving mental health.

"Police will not put down the phone. But we'll be choosing the best organization to take over those duties," Mr. Noble said.

The time spent carefully going over each person's story and vulnerabilities in our contact center and directing them in the right direction may actually take more time.

It most certainly isn't turning away from those in need.

"Hopefully, this will give our officers on the ground more time to deal with crime and disorder.
