The top detective agency in India should look into the fatal crash that claimed 275 lives, according to the railway ministry of that nation.
While making the announcement, Ashwini Vaishnaw, the minister of railways, remained mum on the specifics.
Preliminary reports indicate that a signal fault caused the crash, and investigations led by the railways have already begun.
According to reports, the three-train collision on Friday night was India's worst rail mishap this century.
Over 1,000 people were injured and taken to hospitals. Some families continue to look for their missing loved ones.
It's unclear why, given that other investigations have already gotten underway, the Railway Board, the ministry's highest decision-making body, has recommended a different investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The CBI looks into high-profile crimes, such as murders and major financial frauds.
On Sunday, Mr. Vaishnaw claimed that "the root cause" of the accident and those accountable for the "criminal act" had been found.
A "change in electronic interlocking," he continued, "was probably what caused the accident.". Waiting for the final report was advised by the minister.
The cause would be revealed in a report by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, he promised.
Railways stated on Sunday that a signal issue and a "change in electronic interlocking" were to blame for the Coromandel Express' engine and coaches colliding with a goods train.
The electronic interlocking system in railway signaling establishes paths for each train in a predetermined area, ensuring the secure movement of trains along the track.
The Coromandel Express coaches were thrown onto a third track as a result of the collision, where they collided with the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express's rear carriages as it was speeding down the line.
On board the two passenger trains, there were reportedly more than 3,000 passengers.
Several coaches were crushed in the collision, according to Atul Karwal, commander of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). In order to reach the passengers, rescuers had to cut through the debris.
In order to rescue passengers and remove bodies, hundreds of ambulances, medical professionals, and rescue workers were dispatched to the scene.
On Sunday night, Mr. Vaishnaw reported that train traffic had resumed on the railroad tracks where the accident had occurred.
Several passengers, according to reports, remain missing.
Mr. Vaishnaw has been urged to accept responsibility for the tragedy and resign by opposition leaders.
They have been urged not to politicize the accident in response from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
