A top leader's arrest for alleged corruption has sparked nationwide protests from members of the party that rules the Indian capital of Delhi.

A federal agency detained Manish Sisodia on Sunday due to alleged violations of the city's alcohol policy. Sisodia is the deputy chief minister of Delhi.

He refutes the accusations, as does his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

On Monday, Mr. Sisodia will appear in court.

In anticipation of the protest, the Delhi Police has mobilized its resources throughout the city and blocked off several roads.

According to India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Mr. Sisodia was detained in connection with the CBI's investigation into Delhi's liquor policy, which saw the opening of new alcohol stores that were later shut down after the Delhi government withdrew the scheme.

It said on Sunday that despite being presented with evidence to the contrary, "he gave evasive answers and did not cooperate [with] the investigation.".

However, according to the AAP, Mr. Sisodia is innocent and that his arrest was the result of "dirty politics," not him.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the dominant opposition force in Delhi, is in charge of the federal government, which the CBI answers to.

Over a number of issues, the AAP and the BJP have been at odds in the capital. The AAP has claimed that the BJP uses federal institutions to obstruct its efforts, while the BJP has accused the AAP of corruption on numerous occasions.

Satyendra Jain, the health minister for Delhi, was detained in connection with a money laundering case last year; he has denied the accusations and is still in jail as a result of a Delhi court's denial of his bail request.

Since the AAP was founded more than ten years ago as a result of a significant anti-corruption movement, questions of corruption are a sensitive subject for them.

With the BJP currently in power in Delhi and Punjab and plans to run in more state elections this year, it has been attempting to establish itself as a major force in the opposition.

After being questioned for roughly eight hours at the CBI headquarters, Mr. Sisodia was taken into custody on Sunday evening. He had visited Raj Ghat's Mahatma Gandhi memorial with other AAP leaders before arriving at the office. .

He had also requested in a speech that party members take care of his family because he "might have to go to jail for seven-eight months.".

We will take care of your family Manish, don't worry, tweeted Delhi Chief Minister and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal following his arrest.
