Recycler of construction waste will open a £6 million facility close to Cumbernauld

Livingston houses the Brewster Brothers site

The second construction waste recycling facility of a Scottish company is about to open.

Brewster Brothers, based in Livingston, claimed that its brand-new $6 million wash facility in North Lanarkshire would have the capacity to recycle 300,000 tonnes of waste annually that would otherwise go to the landfill.

To be reused in the building industry, the facility will transform waste into high-quality aggregates.

Its headquarters will be in Cumbernauld, at the site of the former Gartshore Brickworks.

The newly developed site, which is currently accessible for the disposal of soil and debris, is anticipated to be fully functional by the fall. Plans call for recycling an old building and converting the area into a park.

Brewster Brothers, which currently employs 39 people at its plant in Livingston, anticipates adding 22 new employees at Gartshore with the help of the Scottish government's Green Jobs Fund.

More than a million tonnes of construction, demolition, and excavation (CDE) waste have been kept out of landfills over the last five years thanks to the company.

Over that time, it projects to have produced more than 750,000 tonnes of recycled aggregates.

Brewster Brothers claimed that the need to adopt circular business models and meet sustainability goals is becoming increasingly recognized within the construction industry.

Zero Waste Scotland asserts that construction-related activities are responsible for 50% of Scotland's waste.

The sustainable resource management company was founded in 2017 by managing director Scott Brewster and his father, Alex Brewster.

Reducing industry waste and lessening the environmental impact of new construction and infrastructure projects, according to Scott, is "a growing imperative.".

"We will be able to service 44% of the Scottish construction market by investing in a second site at Gartshore, while keeping our own carbon footprint to a minimum," he continued.
