The Council of Ministers has approved projects that call for producing about 75% of the electricity used on the Isle of Man through on-shore wind and solar energy.

Manx Utilities (MU) plans to put solar panels on public parking lots and governmental structures.

By 2026, 30MW of electricity could be produced by wind turbines on public lands.

Chief Minister Alfred Cannan stated that MU would be responsible for securing funding for the endeavor.

According to him, the government-owned MU will be able to "take the electricity and distribute it" by using some of the infrastructure that the private sector will supply.

But he went on to say that "big questions" needed to be raised regarding how much electricity MU should produce "versus how much should come from the private sector".

While the Isle of Man's average electricity demand is 40 MW, it can reach a winter peak of 75 MW and a summer nighttime low of 25 MW.

The best strategy for boosting renewable energy, according to MU Chairman Tim Johnston, is being "detailed worked on.".

He went on to say that the company had enlisted the aid of independent, specialized consultants in order to accomplish this without "compromise supply security and the needs" of the client.

By decarbonizing the island's electricity supply by 2030, Mr. Cannan claimed that the action showed the government's commitment to achieving the island's climate change targets.

He added that worries about the world's supply of gas, which is used to produce the majority of the island's electricity, and the conflict in Ukraine had "brought into sharp focus the importance of energy security".
