A man has been detained in Spain who is allegedly a senior member of the Kinahan organized crime group from the Republic of Ireland.

After the UK issued a warrant, Liam Byrne, 42, of Dublin, was taken into custody in Majorca on Sunday night on suspicion of crimes involving firearms.

He was detained while having dinner with his family in an Alcudia restaurant, according to the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA).

As a result of a feud between the Kinahan and Hutch criminal organizations, his brother David Byrne was shot and killed at a boxing match in Dublin in 2016.

Gerard Hutch, 60, was acquitted of murdering David Byrne in April.

Commissioner of An Garda Sochána (the Irish police force), Justin Kelly, described Liam Byrne's arrest as a "particularly significant development" in the global campaign "to dismantle the operations of the Kinahan organized crime group.".

His close ties to the Kinahan gang were previously mentioned in court by Irish authorities.

Last Tuesday, Spanish authorities detained Jack Kavanagh, 22, an alleged member of the group, at the airport in Malaga, Staffordshire, England.

Additional charges against him involve firearms.

The NCA investigation was assisted by the Spanish National Police and An Garda Sochána, and it resulted in the arrests.

The organization claimed it obtained the arrest warrants after intercepting messages that showed the couple was allegedly involved in the supply and acquisition of firearms.

The NCA's Kay Mellor stated: "This investigation is a component of the NCA's ongoing efforts to target the Kinahan crime group.

"Jack Kavanagh and Liam Byrne had been eluding the law for a while, but they were recently detained in connection with serious firearms offenses.

"We have a great working relationship with the Spanish National Police and will continue to collaborate closely with our international partners to make sure that those who believe they can remain undetected have nowhere to go," said the Spanish National Police. ".

While extradition proceedings are ongoing, Jack Kavanagh and Liam Byrne are being held in Spanish custody.
