According to US media reports, a personal assistant to Donald Trump has been charged with mishandling classified documents.
Walt Nauta, a former navy aide, worked at the White House before moving on to Mr. Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort.
Unknown charges may be brought against Mr. Nauta in this case.
Trump is accused of mishandling classified documents and obstructing the justice system, among other charges, according to his attorneys.
The Wall Street Journal broke the news of Mr. Nauta's accusations first.
The newspaper claims that Mr. Nauta came under investigation's scrutiny after surveillance video showed him removing boxes from a storage area. It was documented both before and after Mr. Trump was issued a subpoena in May ordering him to hand over government records kept at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
At least twice before declining further questioning, Mr. Naura spoke with investigators, according to the Journal.
On his social media channel Truth Social, Mr. Trump claimed that the US Justice Department was "trying to destroy" Mr. Nauta's life "like the lives of so many others, hoping that he will say bad things about Trump" like it had been done to so many others.
He is a great patriot, strong, and brave, Mr. Trump continued.
The BBC has contacted Mr. Nauta's attorney for comment.
Court officials have not yet revealed the charges against Mr. Nauta and Mr. Trump. On June 13, the charges against Mr. Trump will be read in a federal courtroom in Miami, Florida.
The former president is accused of mishandling classified documents and obstructing an investigation into the storage of the documents at his Florida home, according to the former president's lawyers, who announced this on Thursday. Both of these are punishable by imprisonment as federal felonies.
A few hours later on Friday, Jim Trusty and John Rowley, Mr. Trump's attorneys, announced that they were parting ways with him and would no longer be his counsel.
On Truth Social, Mr. Trump announced that his legal team had changed.
In a joint statement, the two men said, "This morning we tendered our resignations as counsel to President Trump, and we will no longer represent him on either the indicted case or the 6 January investigation.".
Both of them acknowledged that spending the previous year defending Mr. Trump had been "an honor," but added that given that the lawsuit had been filed in Miami, the attorneys felt it was now a "logical moment" to withdraw.
According to law enforcement sources speaking to CBS, the US partner of the BBC, the US Secret Service will meet with Mr. Trump's team on Friday to plan his travel and court appearance.
