Anglesey: Plans to remove a new bridge are an insult to the community

Angelsey's Britannia Bridge

A third bridge between Anglesey and the mainland was planned, and scrapping those plans would be an "insult" to islanders, a MS has claimed.

Despite acknowledging that Anglesey's lack of investor appeal was caused by traffic and delays, a roads review has recommended that the project be shelved.

Another Menai Strait crossing, according to Ynys Mon MS Rhun Ap Iorwerth, was "desperately needed" while residents were frustrated.

The Welsh government has not yet endorsed the advice, though.

After the temporary closure of the Menai Bridge, it was stated in December that a new crossing was most likely.

The news of the recommended termination coincided with the announcement that all major road construction in Wales had been halted due to environmental concerns.

"Labour's cancellation of the desperately needed third Menai crossing is an insult to the people of Ynys Môn," claimed Mr. Iorwerth.

"I agree in principle that in this age of climate concern, the bar should be raised for how far road projects can advance. However, a third bridge addresses the fundamental toughness of our transportation system.

"The impact of the Menai suspension bridge closure over the past few months is not even mentioned in the review. Did they fail to observe firsthand what 'lack of resilience' looks like?

The decision, according to Virginia Crosbie, the Conservative MP for Ynys Mon, demonstrates a "lack of common sense and long-term vision" on the part of the Welsh government.

She declared, "This will gradually destroy the Welsh economy.".

"We are banning diesel and the sale of gasoline cars by 2030, making our roads greener.

"We must consider electric vehicles and make investments in more charging stations, grants, and scrappage programs. ".

It is estimated that more than 42,300 vehicles cross the Menai Strait from Anglesey each day using the two bridges, with the number of vehicles using the A55 Britannia bridge increasing over the past ten years.

Jo Allport, an optometrist, commutes from Abergele in the county of Conwy to the island where she conducts business.

She declared that a third crossing was "absolutely necessary.".

"If there is a problem on the bridge, it will have a negative effect. It keeps them on the island for our clients and patients. ".

A third crossing is "absolutely necessary," according to optometrist Jo Allport.

One of the bridges could close, according to Rhian Sinnott, owner of the Cain gift shop in Llangefni, causing "havoc" on the island.

"There's just too much traffic, and that prevents a lot of customers from crossing over onto the island," she said.

"The same is true for us islanders; we hesitate before going to Bangor. ".

When one bridge closes, "havoc" is caused, according to shopkeeper Rhian Sinnott.

The'red route' through Flintshire was also abandoned.

In its place, initiatives to reduce pollution and relieve traffic on existing roads will be implemented.

The planned new road would have passed directly through the land owned by Robert Hodgkinson, a farmer in the nearby town of Tyn y Coed.

It's so gratifying to learn that rationality has at last won out, he said.

The road would have had an impact on otters, badgers, barn owls, and bats, according to Adrian Lloyd Jones of the North Wales Wildlife Trust.

We are ecstatic that our tireless campaigning efforts have paid off, he said.

Ian Roberts
Ian Roberts, the leader of the Flintshire Council, expressed disappointment over the "red route"'s cancellation.

Leader of the Flintshire Council Ian Roberts, however, expressed disappointment with the choice and worry that no alternate plans had been put forth.

"To reduce the negative effects of traffic congestion on the local economy, to enhance air quality, and to make investments in transportation infrastructure and services, a package of measures and funding are required.
