New recycling and waste disposal facility opens on the Isle of Man

Eastern Civic Amenity Site, a new development

On the Isle of Man, a new recycling and trash facility worth £3 million has opened.

At 08:00 BST, the Braddan Eastern Civic Amenity Site welcomed visitors.

A larger reuse shed, more recycling and trash skips, and more parking are all features of the development, which is run by Douglas Council.

Natalie Byron-Teare, the mayor of Douglas, expressed her hope that it would motivate locals to recycle more than they had been doing at the previous location in Pulrose.

There, recycling rates were around 50%, but Ms. Byron-Teare said the larger tip might see recycling rates as high as 70%.

The mayor added that any decrease in "residual" waste would save money on the ratepayers' expense of disposing of it.

The Middle Park Industrial Estate location will provide service to the capital as well as Onchan, Braddan, Santon, and Garff.

On behalf of a joint committee of the local authorities, which splits responsibility for waste management in the east of the island, it was constructed by real estate developer Dandara.

After worries that the Pulrose tip had reached capacity, construction on the site started in 2022.   .

The previous location had been in operation for more than two decades before it closed on Sunday.

During the summer, the tip will be open from 08:00 to 19:00 on Monday through Saturday and from 08:00 to 16:00 on Sundays and holidays.

Daily hours of operation during the winter are 08:00–16:00.
